DANBO
2O15-2O17
To me, the subject of a photograph is greatly influential on the story it tells. The way that the subject is composed in the image allows for a story to unfold within the frame. The subject of these photographs is a series of different action figures and toys. By using these small but articulate subjects I am able to construct a scene that tell a unique story.
When deciding what subject to use I often choose to shoot with a Danboard model, the little cardboard robot. Also known as Danbo, the robot has a curious look spread across his face, making him look fascinated about the world around him. I enjoy finding locations to place him in to create a small scene of exploration and wonder. His small scale makes him seem delicate and innocent, like a small boy lost in a world he does not understand. The Danboard figurine comes in various different designs as well, in some models he is made out of Amazon parcels and in others he is built to replicate an aeroplane. The variations in design allow for a range of different scenarios that can be set up. I also use other models as subjects for my toy photographs, as with these I can create new scenes entirely.
Although it may seem like playing with toys (sometimes it is) I find using models for subjects good practice for other genres of still life photography.
